The Combined Defence Services (CDS) Examination, conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC), is the gateway to a prestigious career in the Indian Armed Forces. The exam is tailored to assess candidates for two categories: those applying to the Indian Military Academy (IMA), Indian Naval Academy (INA), and Air Force Academy (AFA) are required to appear for three sections—English, General Knowledge, and Elementary Mathematics. For candidates applying to the Officers’ Training Academy (OTA), the syllabus includes only English and General Knowledge.
The English section evaluates the candidate’s command of the language through various components such as spotting errors, sentence improvement, and reading comprehension. It also covers fill-in-the-blanks exercises, vocabulary-based questions like synonyms, antonyms, idioms, and phrases, as well as grammatical concepts such as sentence arrangement, active and passive voice, and one-word substitutions.
The General Knowledge section is comprehensive and focuses on current events, scientific developments, and topics of national and international importance. This includes Indian history, spanning ancient, medieval, and modern eras, along with geography, covering physical, social, and economic aspects. It also delves into Indian polity and the constitution, the economy, environmental issues, and recent developments in defence and technology. Topics such as books and authors, awards and honors, and global affairs are integral parts of this section.
The Elementary Mathematics section is designed to test a candidate’s analytical and numerical ability. It includes arithmetic concepts such as the number system, HCF and LCM, percentages, time and distance, profit and loss, simple and compound interest, and ratio and proportion. Algebra focuses on linear and quadratic equations, while geometry covers lines, angles, triangles, quadrilaterals, circles, and parallel lines. Mensuration involves calculations of areas and volumes of plane and solid figures, such as squares, rectangles, triangles, circles, cubes, cuboids, spheres, cylinders, and cones. Additionally, trigonometry includes topics like heights, distances, and trigonometric ratios. Basic statistics, including mean, median, mode, and data interpretation, is also a part of the syllabus.
Preparing for the CDS Examination requires a strategic approach. A thorough understanding of the syllabus, regular practice, and staying updated with current affairs are key. Candidates are encouraged to refer to standard textbooks, particularly NCERTs, solve previous years’ question papers, and practice effective time management.
The CDS Examination opens the doors to an honorable and rewarding career in the Indian Armed Forces. With disciplined preparation and determination, candidates can achieve their aspirations.
